Winter has many parts of the country tight in its icy grasp. With the chilly breezes come many questions at Chapman Payson about the best used cars for winter driving. Typical questions include “which cars handle well in snow and ice?” “What makes and models heat quickly and remain fuel efficient?””How can buyers find a used car that both fits their needs and keeps them safe in winter driving conditions?” We’ve compiled a list of our five favorite used cars for winter driving. Our inventory at Chapman Payson is constantly changing, so you’ll want to stop by our showroom or check online to see what used cars for sale we have right now!

You’ll find that our list includes sedans, crossovers, SUVs and mini-vans. We looked for vehicles that have known reliability, good gas mileage and all-wheel drive (AWD), as well as other safety features that would be beneficial in winter driving conditions. AWD helps stabilize the car in case it starts to slip on slick snow and ice – each wheel moves independently, giving the car more power to move ahead.

Ford Taurus
With available AWD, heated outboard mirrors and dual-climate control, this option is perfect for buyers who want the size and gas mileage of a sedan, while still having the power needed to overcome snow and ice.

Toyota Sienna
The only minivan with available AWD, the Toyota Sienna is a perfect choice for family-minded drivers who don’t want a little freezing rain to hamper their trip over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house.

Chevy Tahoe
With its wide base and AWD, the Chevy Tahoe makes a great buy for anyone looking for the comfort and versatility an SUV brings.

Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep is known for churning out vehicles that can battle rugged and rough terrain and the Grand Cherokees are no exception. A powerful engine, AWD and height make this a perfect match for drivers who must face the elements.

Nissan Pathfinder
It’s rare to find a crossover that really combines the spaciousness and versatility of an SUV with the compact size and practicality of a sedan, but the Pathfinder does just that and handles like a dream in slick, icy weather!

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

For 2014, the Grand Cherokee may look like last year’s model, but there’s huge news under the hood. For the first time in the U.S., buyers can select a diesel engine that should enable the Grand Cherokee to make quite the road-trip without having to stop for gas.

Combined with new eight-speed automatic transmissions now used across the model range, the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel produces 240 hp and 420 ft.-lbs. of torque. It’s the ample torque that will enable diesel Grand Cherokees to tow up to 7,400 lbs. The engine, coupled with the eight-speed automatic, helps two-wheel-drive EcoDiesel Grand Cherokees with an EPA estimated fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city and 30 highways.

On the safety front, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers technology of forward collision warning, select-speed control, which includes both hill-ascent and hill-descent control for steep grades. For city driving, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross path detection are available, which assist drivers when changing lanes or in parking lots. The Grand Cherokee has also earned a trailer-load of awards and honors, including being named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Also new for  2014 is the 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment interface that 2013 Ram 1500 owners have enjoyed. It is available on Laredo and Limited models and standard on the upscale Overland and Summit Grand Cherokees. Internet apps and “hot spot” connectivity now is possible through an available six- or 12-month Uconnect Access feature. Owners of such vehicles will be able to perform tasks such as opening doors remotely, get help if their vehicle is stolen or doing local Yelp searches.

All 2014 Grand Cherokee models also come with a 7-inch driver information display that can be programmed to show analog or digital speedometer, display turn-by-turn navigation directions, and much more information.
